Generator Fire in Large Power Plant

ESi was retained to perform a cause and origin evaluation on a fire that ensued after a fault occurred in the iso-phase ducts between the generator and the generator step-up transformer in a large power plant. ESi determined the arcing fault caused hydrogen gas and oil to escape from the generator. The arcing caused an oil-hydrogen-air mixture that ignited, giving rise to the fireball visible at the end of the generator.
