ESi Announces 2024 Principal Promotions

Engineering Systems Inc. (ESi), a leading provider of forensic engineering and consulting services, is pleased to announce the following promotions to firm Principal, effective January 1, 2024. These individuals have displayed a dedication to their work, a desire to learn, and a willingness to adapt, and are true representations of the phrase “leading by example.” As Principals within ESi, they are responsible for helping guide the future of our staff and company while ensuring the integrity of our work for our clients.  

  • Matthew Brach, Ph.D., P.E. brings over 20 years of automotive engineering experience, including the analysis and reconstruction of several large-scale crashes involving vehicles ranging from motorcycles, bicycles, locomotives, and trains to a horse and buggy. Matt’s efforts have been vital to the growth of ESi’s Automotive practice and Illinois office, where he also serves as Regional Operations Manager.
  • Hernán Mercado-Corujo, M.S., P.E., IAAI-CFI, CFEI, CVFI combines his 20+ years of mechanical engineering experience in auto OEM design/engineering/testing with an extensive background in forensic failure analysis, hands-on testing, consulting, and providing expert witness testimony for clients nationwide. Hernán's proficiency in both English and Spanish has been instrumental in enabling ESi to effectively meet the needs of our Spanish-speaking clients, and Hernán has stepped up to mentor ESi's Spanish-speaking testifying experts internally.
  • Jonathan Jordan, P.E., CFEI specializes in electrical engineering cases and has performed numerous investigations into fires involving electrical issues. His background includes extensive experience in the assessment of electronic products, their failure modes, and their compliance with relevant safety standards, including those set forth by Underwriters Laboratories and the Canadian Standards Association. During his tenure at ESi, Jonathan has also leveraged his extensive expertise analyzing safety failures in products such as appliances, HVAC/R systems, residential and commercial wiring, and lithium-ion batteries.
  • Pierce Umberger, Ph.D., P.E. has established a 10+ year career in mechanical engineering and materials science during his time at ESi. He has a broad range of experience in the analysis of complex, multidisciplinary failures involving mechanical components and systems in the automotive, rail, aviation, consumer products, construction, and building products industries, and has contributed significantly to the growth of our Georgia office through both his client-facing work and internal mentorship efforts.
