Michael D. Pratt, P.E. has a long history of providing strong technical leadership in both military and civilian environments. As Principal and the Director of Fires and Explosions at ESi, he is a creative problem solver and strategic thinker, responsible for the overall operations of the company and charged with providing direct oversight and management of our Fire and Explosions practice. Mr. Pratt specializes in investigating fire and explosions that occur in industrial, commercial, and residential facilities.  

Forensic Consulting

Mr. Pratt joined ESi with a deep background in forensic consulting, and has been involved in over 2,500 investigations, ranging from small pipe ruptures to multimillion-dollar industrial plant explosions. He has worked extensively throughout North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean Islands, and is recognized nationally and internationally for his expertise in boiler explosions and ruptures, steam and gas turbine failures, and incidents involving pressure vessel/process piping, propane, and natural gas. His expertise also includes hazardous operations and emergency response, industrial plant restoration management, and machinery and equipment replacement/repair cost estimation.

Large Loss Project Management

Clients seek out Mr. Pratt both for his extensive engineering experience and his deep commitment to building trust and delivering value. By pairing strong forensic investigation skills with a broad background in large loss project management, Mr. Pratt has helped clients minimize restoration and business interruption costs, in some cases resulting in savings of millions of dollars. His clients span multiple industries and geographies, and include power utilities, pulp and paper facilities, chemical and petrochemical plants, mining operations, and textile manufacturers.

Mr. Pratt holds a professional engineer license in fifteen states and numerous certifications, including Mine Safety and Health Administration, Fire and Explosion, and Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. He has also taught courses on subjects ranging from forensic investigation to machine design, water damage to equipment, and lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina.
